Library Edge is a web-based library management system designed to help libraries organize books, manage members, record borrowing and returns, and monitor library activities more efficiently. It replaces manual registers and disconnected spreadsheets with a centralized digital platform that is easier to manage, search and report from.
Many community and small organizational libraries still manage their collections using paper notebooks, printed membership records or basic spreadsheets. These methods can make it difficult to know which books are available, who borrowed a book, when it should be returned and whether any materials are overdue.
Library Edge was developed to simplify these processes through one organized digital system. It helps librarians maintain accurate book and member records while making everyday library operations faster and more reliable.
The system allows authorized users to register books, organize them by category and manage information such as book title, author, publisher, publication year and availability status.
Librarians can also register members, issue books, record returns and review borrowing histories. The system automatically updates whether a book is available, borrowed or overdue, helping staff understand the current condition of the library collection.
Librarians can add and manage detailed information about books and other library materials. Records can include:
Book title
Author
Category or subject
Publisher
Publication year
Identification or accession number
Quantity or number of copies
Availability status
This creates a searchable and well-organized digital catalogue.
The system stores information about library members, such as their name, contact details, membership number and registration date.
Librarians can quickly search for a member and review their current loans and borrowing history.
Library Edge allows staff to record when a book is borrowed, who borrowed it and when it is expected to be returned.
When a book is returned, the librarian can update the transaction, and the book becomes available for another member.
The system helps librarians identify books that have not been returned by their due dates.
Overdue records can be filtered and reviewed, making it easier to follow up with members and reduce missing books.
Users can search for books by title, author, category, identification number or availability status.
This allows librarians to find records quickly without manually checking shelves or paper registers.
The system maintains a history of borrowing and return transactions. Librarians can review which books were borrowed, by whom and when they were returned.
This improves record accuracy and accountability.
Library Edge can present important library information through a clear dashboard, including:
Total number of books
Available and borrowed books
Registered members
Active loans
Overdue books
Most borrowed books
Popular book categories
Borrowing activity over time
These reports help librarians understand library usage and make informed decisions about future book collections.
Access to the system can be controlled according to user roles.
Possible roles may include:
Administrator – manages users, system settings and all library records.
Librarian – manages books, members, borrowing and returns.
Viewer or Management User – reviews dashboards and reports without changing operational records.
Library Edge helps libraries improve their daily operations by:
Reducing paper-based record keeping
Making book information easier to search
Preventing confusion about book availability
Tracking borrowed and overdue books
Maintaining accurate member histories
Reducing duplicated and missing records
Improving reporting and decision-making
Saving librarians time during everyday operations
The system gives librarians a clearer overview of their collection, members and borrowing activities. It reduces the time required to manage records and makes important information available from one centralized location.
For community-based libraries, Library Edge can support better access to learning materials by helping librarians understand which books are most useful, which resources are frequently requested and where additional materials may be needed.
I designed and developed Library Edge as a practical solution for libraries that need a simple and organized way to manage their collections and services.
My work included planning the database structure, designing the interface, developing book and member management features, implementing borrowing and return workflows, and creating reporting and dashboard functions.
Library Edge demonstrates my ability to transform a traditional administrative process into a practical, user-friendly digital system.
